Difference between HYBRID and BILLET WHEEL turbocharger. Hybrid and billet wheel turbochargers will look identical to standard units from the outside. (or pick and mix) The changes occur inside, by using different aerodynamic configurations, both in the compressor and turbine wheel sizes/ shapes, and different bearing systems.

There are quite large number of combinations all depends on customer needs. Billet Compressor wheels or MFS Wheels (Manufactured from Solid) or FMW (Forged Milled Wheel) are made from a solid piece of alloy (billet). A CNC milling machine machines the wheel based on individual specific design.

There are many benefits to this type of wheel manufacture, such like. STRENGTH - Billet compressor wheels are far stronger than a cast wheel due to being machine from a solid piece of material rather than via molten material.

AIR FLOW - Billet generally has less flaws. This extra strength allows the wheel blades and hub to be thinner, increasing blade area resulting in increased airflow from a wheel with matching overall dimensions.

WEIGHT - As the Billet compressor wheel can have thinner blades and hub, this means that generally the Billet compressor wheel will also be lighter than its cast counterpart. MODIFICATION - As each wheel is individually machined via a CNC milling machine and CAD program, rather than the multi piece casting tool, it allows the change of the design to modify the wheel for example: adding extra blades, extended exducer tips etc. A one off design now does not need to involve making an expensive dedicated tool to cast.
